Just like when Feng Tianwei, or FTW (not For The Win) for short, when she won the bronze medal in the London Olympics 2012, almost 8 out of 10 Singaporean are NOT proud of the medal, mainly because she is not a true Singaporean who was born here. See below.

While it was argued in the same Yahoo News that that Singapore 'buys' it Olympic medals, and Singapore not being short of money (reserve), why don't Singapore buy someone like Michael Phelps. This way, not only we can get the Gold medal, instead of just settling from the Bronze, we can probably get multiple Gold Medals in the Olympics, not to mention other Games like SEA Games, etc.
To the decision maker who believes religiously in statistics, I don't understand why they are not doing this. Shouldn't be the more rational decision? Statistically proven probably?
